In 2023 my husband and I signed a lease on a farm in Northern Illinois, directly across from the beautiful forest preserve that surrounds the Des Plaines River. With our youngest daughter, our dogs, cats and horses we are excited to build a horsemanship school at this facility. Nestled between corn fields and forest preserve, Sommer North Equestrian Center is a beautiful and well-appointed facility. Small in size but big in heart, we are creating a community of people who love horses and want to learn and grow together.
It all started with a pony named Monkey. I have very little memory of her, other than that she was brown and warm and smelled sweet. Somewhere there is a picture of me, diapered and smiling, sitting on Monkey at the front of about 4 kids who spent that summer wild and free, covered in sweat and horse dirt and definitely living our best life. Since those early days I have learned as much as I have been able to find about horses. How they think, their behavior, what they need and why on earth they tolerate us. Our ambition and drive, is so different from theirs. But they choose to be partners with us. As I grew I realized that I wanted so much more than just to ride horses. I became fascinated by the way that they think, and the idea that I could communicate with them and develop friendships and relationships with them spoke to my heart. Through many years, moving around the country I soaked up as much information and knowledge about horses and horsemanship that I could find. I soon discovered that, as I grew my knowledge base my approach to training horses became quite different than most people. Seeking the horses opinion, looking for their “why” allowed me to discover a pathway to partnership with them that was uncommon. And so I began teaching it. I have developed a lesson program that is based on a specific curriculum, to teach my clients this way of connecting and partnering with horses, no matter what their over-all horsemanship goals are.
My goal for my students is that they experience moments of clarity, moments of understanding between them and the horses, moments of knowing that there is something so much greater, and they have participated in it. Carrying our rudimentary understanding of the language of horses forward to the next generation of horse people, so that they may continue the work of understanding it is the goal of this horsemanship academy. Even if a student never rides, that they can communicate with an animal so different, with their own desires and feelings, this is an accomplishment, and ultimately all that I aspire to do is to create happy horses with human partners, who are working together to achieve the mutual goal of harmony.
